shaded areas. this includes highland, pendleton, grant and mineral counties. we are looking at the onset of some winter precipitation in the form of sleet, snow and freezing rain and then a little later in the day possibly changing into all rain. that depends on how the temperature holds. for us we're looking at precipitation starting to move. in here's our futurecast about midday. then you can see this line which is a mix of precipitation, snow to the just on the line barely as we watch it moving through to the afternoon hours. then you can see it pulls out moving into the 5:00 hour. we'll still be dealing with it. we get a break christmas day. things are dry and pleasant. wednesday things get back in with a second system, a little stronger. so we have a greater chance of seeing more winter precipitation with this system on wednesday than we do on monday, but if you look here, we're right in the middle of the pink. this is a mix of wintery conditions, sleet, snow and freezing rain, the snow to the north, rain to the south. as the temperature rises throughout the day, it becomes a

was a lot of grass, they came to us and i was down at camp pendleton and they asked us it train marines on shovel work. what happened about 6 months later, they ended up sending two battalions to yellowstone. i haven't heard any discussion at all, do you expect the military, the guard or the active forces to be training people to do shovel-like work? all you have talked about so far is aviation. >> one of the challenges with a ground-based attack and training a soldier to be a ground-based fire fighter is the training takes time. and it takes approximately 3 to 5 days of solid training to make sure that they are going to be working in a safe environment to learn what's going on. and most of the time that, the incidents in california will become mitigated. now, not to say that we certainly have that as an option. we have a fairly robust what we call fire crew program using cdcr inmate fire fighters. it is on our radar and it's something that we have as a contingency if we needed to do it. >> lieutenant colonel. >> yes, general, in the mou it does address the ground portion but th

supporting civil authorities. i read that from my perspective down at camp pendleton as the active for the. u.s. northern command have been tasked to (inaudible) defense support to civil authority concept plans. with that, there is a recommendation to integrate and synchronize dod planning with federal, regional and state partners, something that san francisco fleet week has energized in the bay area over the past 3 years. the establishment of the dual status commander helps us pull title 10 and title 32 forces together in a more synchronized dod response. the new attention and focus by dod is only part of the puzzle, though. dod success in helping in response to a disaster will ultimately be determined by civil authorities and their ability to properly plan their initial response and then the means by which dod capabilities are requested and properly employed. we know dod is in support of civil authorities and the real burden to that effective support is going to be sound planning to ensure we're properly directed and we can best benefit or provide benefit to the need of the place where w

report it my boss was about training. we actually have an acu1,000 type capability in pendleton and that is a piece of equipment that bee don't train with routinely the expeditionary folks. i think there is an opportunity in training, it's great when marines get to see the gear and do that type of cross banding we spoke about. civilian authority operates in 700-800 megahertz range. we know fires happen a lot and we're often asked to support so training is a big recommendation i make. >> what i'd recommend is practice makes perfect and flexibility is required. so with communications being flex i will and you have to practice. we did some training events with the acu's in order to teach other agencies how to cross band the radios but it continues to grow. next year there will be a new version of the acu's, which does cross banding of radios. as long as we stay engaged we keep communicating and we keep working to the and keep the lines of communication open, i think the exercise will go excellent as we grow. >> i told my boss that communication's at the heart of everything. the stronge

crashed down an embankment near pendleton, oregon. this photo from oregon state police shows the emergency vehicles responding to the scene this morning. police say the driver hit a patch of ice and crashed through a guardrail. the crash also injured about 20 other people. rescue crews used ropes to help get people back up to the interstate. there were about 40 people on board the charter bus at thousands of first responders gathered today to remember a comrade killed in the line of duty responding to a fire in upstate new york. the casket held the body of volunteer firefighter and police lieutenant michael chiapperini. the 43 year old was one of two firefighters gunned down, police say by an ex- con who deliberately set his house on fire to lure fire crews into a deadly ambush. each law enforcement officer passed by lieutenant chiapperini's casket. the funeral for 19 year old volunteer firefighter tomasz kaczowka is scheduled for tomorrow. >>> 2012 is drawing to a close. and tonight kron4 is looking back at the stories what that story -- tonight at eight-30. but first, the new y
